Need your opinions, I have a keen interest in computing and have already started doing a degree through the Open University, But now I’m starting to question if should I continue.

I’m a workshop joiner at the min, I hate the job but It pays the bills, when I started of as an apprentice there was good money in it, but now thank to Poles etc theres nothing in it, I’m on min wage.

I started retraining during a spell of unemployments as it was free with the Open Uni, I have got 60 points from 1 year, but now i’ve heard everyone has a degree in computing and theres not enough jobs to go around. So i’m really unsure what to do, to continue or not.

Either way I can not survive on min wage, I have a family to keep but thats all thats on offer in my trade as I have made a few enquires

There will always be money in computers, you just have to carve out a niche that will work for you. Education is always an asset, and if you look hard enough you will find a job that works for you. I’m not sure exactly what Open University is, but as long as it’s an accredited institution you should be fine. Just stick with it. If you have the time/money, get additional qualifications (say take a 3-week course on some specialization you’re interested in), it all helps out. It’s not always easy making yourself marketable, but education is worth it, trust me.

It sound as though you are discouraged. A continued education it always beneficial. Thing always look bleak when we are discouraged. However, things work out for the good. Keep a positive outlook, hope for the best. Be realistic not “everyone” has a degree in computing. Computer science is in the top three of the ten most marketable job skills at every level, Bachelors, Masters, and PhD. Keep going. Good luck!
